Japanese Teenager Stuns Top Seed Blake in Final
日本のティーンエイジャーが決勝でトップシードのブレイクを圧倒
予選上がりで10代の錦織圭がほぼ16年ぶりの日本人ATPタイトル保持者となった。彼はデルレイビーチ国際選手権の決勝において第1シードのジェームス・ブレイクを圧倒した。
18歳1か月19日の錦織は、1998年1月11日アデレードの零トン・ヒューイット（16歳10か月18日）以降の最年少ATP大会優勝者となった。彼はまた1992年4月にソウルで優勝した松岡修造以来の日本人シングルス優勝者である。
今大会は錦織にとって今年初めてのATP大会だったが、準決勝のサム・クエリー戦で4つのマッチポイントをしのいだ。彼はまた決勝においても同様に落ち着いていており、ファイナルセットの第2ゲームで3つのブレイクポイントをしのぐと、続くブレイクのサービスゲームをブレイク。その後ラブゲームでサービスキープして3-1とリードした。ゲームカウント5-4でもラブゲームでサービスゲームをキープした。
「昨日の晩は決勝に勝つことをイメージしようとしたけど、できなかった。1stセットはかなりナーバスになっていたが、2ndセットになると自信を持ってプレーできるようになった。｣と錦織。
「今大会は私の人生で最高のトーナメントになった。今、ものすごくうれしい。9日間で8試合プレーしたが、疲れは感じなかった。｣
錦織はSE（Special Exemption: 前週の大会で勝ち上がったために予選の日程に間に合わない選手に与えられる予選の特別免除）を受け、来週サンノゼで行われるSAPオープンの本選に出場する。
怖いもの知らずの錦織はそのフットワーク（court speed＝移動速度と解釈）とフォアバック両方からウィナーを奪う能力でブレイクを圧倒した。ブレイクは1stサーブで5ポイントしか落とさなかったが、逆に2ndサーブでは44％のポイントしか奪うことができなかった。
錦織は昨年デビューし、ATPレベルのトーナメントで3勝5敗の記録を残したが、今年に入ってからは先月のマイアミチャレンジャーでのベスト4が唯一の本選出場だった。4週間前にはダラスチャレンジャーの予選で敗退している。
今大会の優勝により、錦織は月曜日に発表されるATPランキングで244位から131位に上昇する予定である。
これまで本大会で予選から優勝したのは1998年のアンドリュー・イリー（netdash注：「シャツ裂きイリー｣ですね）が唯一で、そのころは大会はコーラル・スプリングスのクレーコートで 行われていた。またATP大会のシングルスで優勝した予選通過者は、2007年7月22日のスティーブ・ダルシス（AmersfoortでW.エシャウワーを下す)以来である。
ブレイクは全豪オープンベスト8以来の大会出場で、自身11個目のATPタイトルを狙っていたが、昨年グザビエ・マリッセに敗れたのに引き続いての準優勝となった。
「彼は本当にいいプレーをしたし、イライラしたところが全く無かった。｣錦織についてブレイクはこう語った。「これまでの試合ほどリターンが良くなかった。3セットでサービスブレイクが1回だけだったことがそれを物語っている。彼はのびのびと、失いものが何もないという感じでプレーしているように思えた。準決勝で4つもマッチポイントをしのいだ後だから、カジノのお金でゲームをやっているようなものだ(playing with house money)。予測できないところからいきなりウィナーを打ってきたよ。｣
「ここまで来て負けるのはがっかりだけど、トーナメントを通じていいプレイができた。｣
ブレイクにとって錦織のような低いランキングの選手に負けたことは、2005年の本大会1回戦でのT.ガバシュビリ戦（当時262位）以来である。
Teen qualifier Kei Nishikori became the first Japanese ATP title winner in almost 16 years when he stunned top seed James Blake in the final of the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships. Playing just his sixth ATP tournament, Nishikori rallied from a set down to win 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
At 18 years, 1 month, 19 days old, Nishikori is the youngest player to win an ATP title since Lleyton Hewitt (16 years, 10 months, 18 days) in Adelaide on January 11, 1998. Additionally, he is the first Japanese ATP singles titlist since Shuzo Matsuoka won Seoul in April 1992.
Playing his first ATP event of the year, Nishikori saved four match points against American Sam Querrey in the semifinals. He showed similar composure in the final. He saved three break points in the second game of the third set, then broke Blake in the next game and held to love for a 3-1 lead. At 5-4 he served out the match to love.
“Last night I tried to imagine winning the final, but I couldn’t do it,” Nishikori said. “I was so nervous in the first set. During the second set I started to feel more confident. ”
“This is the best tournament in my life. I am so happy right now. I played eight matches in nine days but I didn’t feel tired.”
Nishikori has received a special exemption into the main draw of next week’s SAP Open in San Jose.
The fearless Nishikori stunned Blake with his court speed and ability to hit winners from both wings. Blake lost just five points on his first serve but won just 44 percent of points on his second serve.
In his rookie season last year, Nishikori returned a 3-5 record in five ATP-level tournaments. Before this week, Nishikori had played just one main draw event this year, reaching the semifinals of the Miami Challenger last month. Four weeks ago he lost in the qualifying rounds of the Dallas Challenger.
By winning the title Nishikori will rise from No. 244 to No. 131 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings, to be released Monday.
The only other qualifier to ever win the tournament was Andrew Ilie in 1998, when the event was played on clay in Coral Springs. The last qualifier to reach an ATP singles final and win was Steve Darcis on July 22, 2007 at Amersfoort. (He beat Werner Eschauer for the title).
Blake, playing his first tournament since a quarterfinal showing at the Australian Open, was chasing his 11th ATP title. The American lost to Xavier Malisse in last year’s Delray Beach final.
“He played really well and didn’t show any kind of nerves,” Blake said of Nishikori. “I didn’t feel like I returned as well as I had in past matches. [Only getting] one break in a three-set match says a lot on my part. I felt he’d be carefree and play like he had nothing to lose. After you save four match points in the semis you are playing with house money. He hit cold winners at times you wouldn’t expect them.”
“It’s disappointing to get this far in and lose, but I played well during the tournament.”
Blake had not lost to a player ranked as low as Nishikori since suffering a first-round defeat against No. 262 Teimuraz Gabashvili at Delray Beach in 2005.
